Ahmedabad Homestay for International Tourists & NRIs: Complete Pre-Arrival & Visa Guide

Everything an international guest needs to know before landing in Ahmedabad — visa formalities, currency, SIM cards, safety and getting around.

Your Complete Pre-Arrival Guide to Staying in Ahmedabad, India

Landing in a new country can feel overwhelming — the paperwork, the currency, getting a local number, knowing who to trust with your safety. This guide walks international tourists and NRI (Non-Resident Indian) guests through everything to sort out before and just after arrival in Ahmedabad: visa and C-Form formalities, currency exchange, SIM cards, digital payments, and local transport. It builds on our Mandatory Foreigner Registration guide with the practical, day-one details that guide doesn't cover.

NRI -Foreign Tourist Guide

Visa Formalities and Foreigner Registration (C-Form)

Every foreign national staying in Indian accommodation — hotels and homestays alike — must be registered with local authorities through the C-Form system, typically submitted online via the FRRO (Foreigner Regional Registration Office) portal within 24 hours of check-in. At Homeland Stay, this is not something you need to research or file yourself — our team completes your C-Form registration as part of check-in, using your passport, visa and arrival details collected during our pre-arrival web check-in process.

What to keep ready:

  • Valid passport with at least 6 months' validity remaining
  • Valid Indian visa (tourist, business, or applicable category)
  • A digital or printed copy of your passport and visa photo page
  • Your India arrival date and port of entry (for the C-Form)
  • Current (after arrival - taken with mobile okay) Photographs

Currency Exchange in Ahmedabad — Where to Get the Best Rate

Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport has currency exchange counters, but based on consistent feedback from our past international guests, airport rates and fees run noticeably higher than what's available in the city. Our recommendation: exchange only a small amount at the airport — enough to cover your taxi, a meal, and small essentials on arrival — then exchange the bulk of your currency at a licensed money changer in the city, where rates are significantly more competitive.

  • Exchange a small amount (enough for transport + first meal) at the airport
  • Exchange the rest at a licensed currency converter in the city for a better rate
  • Keep some cash on hand, but plan to rely mainly on digital payments once your Indian bank card or UPI is set up (see below) - This is based on some past guest feedback.

"Before arrival to Ahmedabad, we come to know through Homeland Stay, and we have done currency exchange small amount at Airport and rest we done at authorized license holder currency exchange center, we got good rate, save lots. Thanks to Homeland Stay" - Rohit Sevak - USA verified guest at Homeland Stay

Getting an Indian SIM Card — What International Travelers Need to Know

Before you fly to India, convert your home-country SIM to an eSIM if your phone and carrier support it. This frees up your phone's physical SIM slot for an Indian SIM card on arrival, so you can keep your original number active (for OTPs and banking apps back home) while using a local number for calls, data and local verification here. Jio and Airtel both offer strong, reliable coverage across Ahmedabad, India. The most recommended providers for travel SIMs. This is based on some past guest feedback.

Documents required to buy a SIM in India:

  • Passport (original, for identity verification)
  • Valid Indian visa
  • A passport-size photograph (some outlets can take one on the spot)
  • Your local Indian address for the period of stay (your homestay address works)

SIM cards are available at the airport on arrival or from authorized stores in the city. If you have local relatives or friends in Ahmedabad, it's often easiest to have them purchase and activate a SIM for you a day or two before you arrive, since new SIM activation for foreign nationals can take a few hours to a day to fully activate. This information based on past guest feedback.

Digital Payments in India — UPI and Cards

India has moved heavily toward digital, QR-code-based payments (UPI), and it's now the default at cafes, shops, taxis and even street vendors across Ahmedabad. If you're an NRI with an Indian bank account, linking your debit card to your phone makes paying for Ola/Uber rides and everyday shopping fast and simple. This also means you don't need to carry large amounts of cash once you're set up.

  • Link an Indian bank card to your phone for UPI/QR payments where possible
  • Ola, Uber, Swiggy, Zomato and most shops accept UPI or card payments
  • International cards work at most hotels, malls and larger establishments, but UPI is faster for everyday local spending
